After the main headline, your call to action is the most important element on your web site. It should stand out from the rest of your copy and be easy for your visitors to find. In order to draw attention to it, use bolding, a larger font size, a different color -- whatever best suits the style of your web site.

To test the effectiveness of your call to action, ask others to look over your homepage. How long does it take them to find your call to action? As a general rule, it shouldn't take people any longer than 3-4 seconds.

Your job is done as soon as you publish, yet the viral effect created by republishing can live on for years. You can continue to get new backlinks without any further effort.

Social bookmarking -- Social bookmarking is an activity that can have great rewards for your site. It's easy to create a number of links back to your sites by social bookmarking a few pages. You can also encourage your visitors to do this for you by placing icons with links to popular social bookmarking sites. In addition, you can increase traffic to your own websites by bookmarking sites that link to yours.

Creating content -- The more pages you have on your site, the more PageRank your site can accumulate. A higher PageRank value for your site will get your site spidered more often, keeping more of your pages in Google's index. It also adds to your site's overall authority. More pages also equates to more value for your visitor, more keywords for the search engines to chew on, and additional internal linking opportunities. All of this results in an increase in website traffic. Building a large content site is not only a proven Web business model with staying power, but also adds real value.

Social media and community sites -- Many people think of Reddit and Digg, but forget about repurposing their content on other social media sites. Instead of trying to play the very difficult game of who's going to Digg me, you should look at user generated content sites that allow you to post a link to your site. Start with the biggest ones first, as they offer great backlinks and the potential for high traffic. These include Hubpages, Squidoo, and Buzzle, as well as a number of up and coming community sites published on the Ning platform and others like Tumblr.

Increasing website traffic with these methods will produce lasting results, as opposed to some of the risky, flash-in-the-pan methods that so many are suggesting these days. Start incorporating one or more of these techniques, and you're sure to see an increase in visitor count.

You want to pique people's interest and make them believe that taking the specified action will offer them a direct benefit.

The most obvious and important call to action, of course, is the one that asks visitors to make a purchase.

It's amazing how many sites neglect to ask for the order. This oversight can be deadly for your business; in fact, studies show that you can increase your sales by at least 80% by clearly instructing your visitors how to make a purchase!

Don't Hurry!

The call to action tis the make-it-or-break-it moment. Closing a sale is like lining up a golf shot -- you can't rush it!

It takes work to close the sale, which is why you can't just skip to this point right away. Before you get there, you have to

* Answer the question: "What's in it for me?" Emphasize the benefits of your product or service.

* Establish your credibility by citing credentials, including customer testimonials, etc.

* Overcome objections to buy

* Build value into your offer

* Back up your offer with a strong guarantee

* Offer bonuses with the purchase

Once you've done all these things, then you can ask for the order. In fact, you must ask for the order at that point! Otherwise, all the great work you've done will be wasted.

Instill a sense of urgency so your visitors feel compelled to make a purchase right away rather than leave and return to your web site later. To create urgency, you can

* Limit the time your offer is available: "Available for 5 DAYS ONLY!"

* Limit the quantity of products or services you offer: "Available only to the first 100 people who order!"

* Include a discount for a on a limited quantity of products.

* Include bonus items for a limited time or on a limited quantity of products.

You need to follow through on any such claims you make, or your credibility will be ruined.

Final Thoughts

After your headline, your call to action is THE most important element on your web site. It should stand out from the rest of your copy and be easy for your visitors to find.

To test the effectiveness of your call to action, ask some friends to look over your homepage. How long does it take them to find your call to action? As a general rule, it shouldn't take people any longer than 3 seconds.

Your call to action is what reflects the true purpose of your web site. It's what gets your visitors to do what you want them to do. Take the time to craft enticing copy that encourages your visitors to take action. If you make people an offer they can't refuse, your sales will really soar!
