Many people think that once they become their own boss they will work less, have less stress and more money. Unfortunately for most would-be entrepreneurs they don't buy a business but instead buy a job.
Here are some tips that will increase your chances of being in the 5% of businesses that succeed:

1. Find Your Passion
Don't just jump on the "next big thing" and put all of your time, money and energy into a project you are not passionate about. Take the time to work out what you are passionate about. What do you like doing? What could you talk about for hours? Even if you haven't liked your previous jobs look at aspects of those jobs you actually enjoyed.

2. Research
Once you find what you are passionate about then you must research that area to find solutions for other people's problems or perhaps an area currently not being addressed well, if at all

3. Business structure
Contact your accountant to ensure that the structure of your business is right from day 1 whether it be a company, partnership etc.

4. Prioritise
To work from home requires focus and excellent time management. At the end of each day write down the tasks you need to complete the next day - in order of importance. If there is something you keep avoiding then put that at the top of your list. Make sure that anything you did not complete is the first thing on your new task list for the next day. Make sure you allow for time with your children. If you don't have children then be time specific when you break down your day. However any mother or father knows that children always find a way to interrupt our plans so a list is the best way to manage time for parents.

5. Promote
Don't be ashamed to promote and market your new business. Of course there are the normal ways of classified ads (both online and offline), pay per click advertising, business cards, emails...to name just a few. But don't underestimate the power of word of mouth. How can people help you if they don't know your business? You will be surprised how many doors open up to you just by talking to people you know.

Owning your own business can be challenging but it is very rewarding. The most important thing is to simply give it a go. Don't spend your life wishing you had have done something rather than sitting on the sidelines watching life pass you by.
